The Estée Lauder Companies Supports The First-Ever London Climate Action Week

Company Feature

Sustainability and Citizenship have long been central to how The Estée Lauder Companies and its brands operate. As a global business, we are very clear on the need for collective, urgent action to avert a global climate catastrophe.

In 2016, we made a global commitment to reach net zero emissions for our operations by the end of 2020, and we’re on track to do so. The UK has played a significant role in advancing our progress towards achieving our climate goals by using solar power for manufacturing and purchasing 100% green electricity through our utilities for all ELC operations where we are responsible for the electricity supply.

Last week, the first ever London Climate Action Week took place in the Capital, bringing together London’s climate expertise and talent from across sectors in a series of events throughout the city focused on taking local, national and international action.

Nancy Mahon, SVP Global Citizenship and Sustainability meets London Mayor, Sadiq Khan

On Monday 1 July, Nancy Mahon, Global Senior Vice President of Citizenship & Sustainability, joined the opening panel event for London Climate Action Week, hosted by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. Discussing how action against climate change can be accelerated and how climate expertise in London can be harnessed and shared with the rest of the world, Nancy highlighted how businesses including ELC are taking meaningful steps and using their voice to advocate for climate action. She explained that The Company can have the greatest impact on climate through developing a full understanding of our Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions as well as by leveraging the power of our brands to inspire and engage millions of consumers to take action themselves through the way they use our products and live their lives.

Later in the week, Philippe Warnery, President UK & Ireland, delivered the opening address at Chatham House’s evening reception for London Climate Action Week on Thursday 4 July. Philippe highlighted the next steps we are taking on our carbon journey, such as working to ensure that our commitment to support the Paris Agreement is matched by actions and results. He also related the imminent adaptation required to fight climate change to ELC’s company heritage. He spoke of Mrs. Estée Lauder’s challenger spirit, acknowledging that she was ahead of her time in many ways in understanding that “one must be able to recognise the moment and seize it without delay”.

As we continue to evolve our work and elevate sustainability as a business-wide priority, we look forward to bringing the energy, intention and learnings from this week back into our business and forming partnerships that we can take forward across all markets where we operate.
