ELC Scientists Present Innovative Research at Global Dermatology Conference

Company Feature

The Estée Lauder Companies’ (ELC) Research & Development teams are at the forefront of skin research and the many environmental, biological and lifestyle factors that impact skin behaviour and appearance. The findings of numerous studies by the Company’s global team of innovators and scientists were showcased at last month’s 2019 World Congress of Dermatology (WCD) in Milan, Italy — a convening of the world’s leading scientists and dermatologists.

"The Estée Lauder Companies' R&D team is a global leader in understanding the impact of biological processes like those in the skin," said Nadine Pernodet, Ph.D., Vice President, Skin Biology and BioActives, Research and Development, The Estée Lauder Companies. "These new findings provide us with an unprecedented snapshot of skin status, enabling new precision approaches and treatments to improve skin's appearance."

Skin metabolomics, skin defence and anti-ageing research were among the topics shared in Milan by ELC’s R&D team:

  • The Importance of Circadian Rhythm on Skin Cells Ability to Repair: ELC is the first company in the beauty industry to study how the skin metabolome is directly affected by circadian rhythm. The findings showed that young skin had a clear natural rhythm of cell repair and protection which changed as the skin got older, causing the skin to accumulate damage. As a result of this research, ELC has a better understanding of key temporal factors that contribute to skin repair efficiency and damage accumulation. Estée Lauder has leveraged this research to further prove the ability of Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II to help skin re-establish its optimal day-night rhythm.
  • The Effect of Air Pollutants on the Skin’s Function: This study measured the effects of air pollutants on skin physiology in a controlled environment. Results showed that air pollutants could be damaging to the skin epidermis and compromise the skin barrier function, potentially causing an inflammatory response within the skin. ELC has leveraged these findings to develop products, such as Clinique’s Dramatically Different™ Hydrating Jelly, a lightweight, water-jelly that delivers 24-hour hydration repair plus pollution protection.
  • How Autophagy Protects Skin Cells from Inflammation: Autophagy refers to the normal physiological process of cell breakdown and damage removal that allows for new cells and proteins to be regenerated. This study found a new connection in skin cells between autophagy and the resolution phase of inflammation. While the resolution phase of inflammation is taking inflammation under control and stopping it, autophagy is removing skin damage that has been created by inflammation (i.e. returning to normal healthy skin). Estée Lauder leveraged insights from this research for its new Advanced Night Repair Intense Reset Concentrate.

Other research presented by ELC at WCD 2019 included the development of a skin model to further understand the causes of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the anti-inflammatory properties of Macrocystis pyrifera ferment, the evaluation of a potent skin brightening agent and a new approach to reducing facial lesions caused by acne.

"Discovery is in our DNA. Our scientists are utilising the latest in precision medicine approaches, leveraging Metabolomics to map the skin networks that will define the future of skincare," said Carl Haney, Executive Vice President, Global R&D, Corporate Innovation, Packaging and Product Development, The Estée Lauder Companies. "Through rigorous research, diverse and exceptional talent and an endless commitment to creativity and innovation, we consistently push the boundaries of modern science to unlock the full potential of our products and deliver meaningful benefits to our consumers."
