The Estée Lauder Companies UK & Ireland Supports Future Dreams House and Local Research

Press Release

The Estée Lauder Companies UK & Ireland pledges £500,000 to fund Breast Cancer Haven’s ‘Future Dreams House’ in Central London and is funding a new UK medical research grant

LONDON, UK – November 27, 2019: The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) UK & Ireland announces a £500,000 commitment to support 'Future Dreams House', which will become national breast cancer charity Breast Cancer Haven's new flagship London centre, and is funding a new UK research grant, building on the company's longstanding mission to create a breast cancer-free world.

Set to open in late summer 2020, Future Dreams House will offer free, personalised services, addressing the emotional and physical side-effects of breast cancer treatment, in a safe, welcoming and homely environment. The House is expected to welcome over 1,400 visitors per year and will be located on Birkenhead Street in central London, within one minute's walk from King's Cross station, making it accessible to patients from 15 hospitals across the Capital. The centre is named Future Dreams House in recognition of the generous financial support Future Dreams has donated towards the refurbishment and operational costs of the building.

ELC UK & Ireland is also delighted to fund a new research grant through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), awarded to Dr Adrian L. Harris, Professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Oxford and Director of the Cancer Research UK Medical Oncology Unit. Dr Harris' research focuses on studying the tumour microenvironment in order to identify new targeted therapies that prevent tumour growth. He is studying ways to starve tumours of the oxygen and nutrients they require and ways to enhance chemotherapy and hormone therapy responses, which has the potential to reveal new strategies for preventing and treating the growth of aggressive breast cancers.

Anna Bartle, Vice President, The Estée Lauder Companies UK & Ireland's Breast Cancer Campaign said: "We're thrilled to partner with Future Dreams and the Breast Cancer Haven to open London's only specialist breast cancer support centre. With one woman diagnosed with breast cancer every 10 minutes in the UK, it's so important that emotional, physical and practical support is offered alongside the excellent medical treatment that the NHS provides." She added: "We're also excited to support new UK medical research, adding to the existing Breast Cancer Research Foundation research grants that the Estée Lauder Companies funds."

Sally Hall, CEO, Breast Cancer Haven said: "It is a great honour to be supported by The Estée Lauder Companies UK & Ireland which, through this generous grant, has recognised the vital work Breast Cancer Haven does in putting people's lives back together after breast cancer has turned their world upside down. To receive this long-term financial support is a huge boost in helping us establish our new centre in King's Cross.

Spencer Leslie, Trustee, Future Dreams added: "Future Dreams is a unique charity founded by two extraordinary women who refused to see breast cancer as an end and the support of The Estée Lauder Companies to help us create this beautiful place in their name has been incredible. The Lauder family has dedicated itself to helping save lives and truly understands how every family touched by breast cancer feels. Watching my wife and mother-in-law cope with breast cancer diagnosis, and learning as a family to live without them, I am truly grateful for this very generous donation that will help us transform the experiences of thousands of women and their loved ones. Future Dreams House is a valued collaboration with Breast Cancer Haven making their life-changing support services available to even more women and thanks to The Estée Lauder Companies our two charities are one step closer to opening the doors."

"Thanks to The Estée Lauder Companies UK & Ireland Award from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, we're able to use the latest technologies and explore new approaches to preventing tumour growth," said Dr Adrian Harris, MD, D.Phil, BCRF researcher and recipient of The Estee Lauder Companies' UK & Ireland Award. "By cutting off the blood supply of tumours at the same time as blocking their metabolism, we may be able to destroy their ability to grow and spread."

ELC UK & Ireland has supported Breast Cancer Haven since 2015, when the Titchfield support centre opened near to the Company's high-tech distribution facility at Kite's Croft. In June 2018, the Evelyn H. Lauder Garden was unveiled at the Breast Cancer Haven West Midlands centre, in recognition of the 25th Anniversary of the Breast Cancer Campaign. In 2017, Future Dreams posthumously honoured Evelyn H. Lauder with the first-ever Humanitarian Achievement Award at their annual Ladies Lunch during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The new half a million-pound commitment will be paid over the course of five years, with the first £100,000 donation made this October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr Harris joins existing ELC-funded UK BCRF grantees: Mitch Dowsett, PhD, BSC and Ian E. Smith, MD, FRCP, FRCPE, both Professors at The Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research in London and; Dame Lesley Fallowfield, DBE, BSc, DPhil, FMedSci Professor in Psycho-oncology at Brighton & Sussex Medical School at the University of Sussex, and Director of the SHORE-C group.
