ELC UK&I extends funding to House of Hope, Scotland’s first dedicated breast cancer support centre

Press Release

London, 10th October - The Estée Lauder Companies continues its work towards a breast cancer-free world, 32 years after Evelyn H. Lauder recognized the need for an open conversation on the disease.

Breast cancer is still the most common cancer among women worldwide, and young women are being impacted more than ever before, with 10,000 women under the age of 50 diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK.

A recent YouGov survey by Breast Cancer Now* found that only 46% of women in the UK regularly checked their breasts for possible signs and symptoms of breast cancer, 34% did not regularly check their breasts, and 9% said they have never checked their breasts. These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for more awareness and education on the disease, as well as support for women facing breast cancer.

The Estée Lauder Companies remains committed to diversifying its support for women facing breast cancer across the UK and continues to support London’s first-ever specialized breast cancer centre, Future Dreams House, which offers a range of services and support for women affected by breast cancer, such as counselling, yoga, massage, nutrition advice, and peer support groups.

The Estée Lauder Companies is proud to announce that a grant has been made to the House of Hope, Scotland’s first dedicated breast cancer wellbeing and support centre. The mission of the House is to improve the quality of life for people impacted by breast cancer by establishing the first bespoke breast cancer support and wellbeing centre in Scotland. The House of Hope will open its doors in Edinburgh in January 2025 to provide access to holistic therapies and wellbeing services away from the sterile hospital or clinical setting to compliment medical treatments.

Founded by Lisa Fleming, who was herself diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in 2017, and her husband Euan, the new House of Hope charity has agreed terms on a property in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh for their first ever specialist support centre in the country, with further sites planned nationally.

Sue Fox, UK&I President of Estée Lauder Companies commented: "We recognise the importance of providing women going through breast cancer with a safe space to heal, both physically and emotionally. We are inspired by the success of Future Dreams House in London, and we are very excited to be extending our funding to the House of Hope, a similar project that will provide care and support to women in Scotland. By diversifying our support for women facing breast cancer across the UK, we hope to make a positive difference in more lives."

Lisa Fleming, Founder and CEO of The House of Hope commented: "This tremendous and much appreciated support from Estée Lauder Companies will allow The House of Hope to engage with the breast cancer network across Scotland to highlight the wellbeing services that will be available. A breast cancer diagnosis at any stage can be all-consuming, but it is the compassion and support of the breast cancer community that helps patients and their families through their unknown journey.

"I have been fortunate to have received personal support from Future Dreams House in London and was immediately inspired to create a similar space in Scotland. The House of Hope will be a haven providing a safe space, while offering connectivity, compassion, and community."

As part of The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign, all ELC employees in the UK&I region are encouraged to advocate for their own breast health. Routine screenings play an important role in early detection, and as part of the company’s commitment, a free yearly mammogram service is offered to all eligible employees over the age of 40, including transgender men and women.

Estée Lauder Companies – Breast Cancer Campaign

For 30 years and counting The Estée Lauder Companies has been a catalyst of progress towards a breast cancer-free world. At a time when an open conversation about breast cancer was needed, Evelyn H. Lauder recognized the need for change. She made it her mission to bring awareness to the disease, address stigmas in women’s health and advocate for action.

In 1992, she co-created the pink ribbon and launched The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign (The Campaign), inspiring a global movement. Together, The Campaign and The Estée Lauder Companies Charitable Foundation have funded more than $131 million for lifesaving global research, education, and medical services with more than $103 million funding medical research through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF).
